Cracked, chipped, discolored or spaces in your teeth can damper your smile and affect your bite. Although diastemas are not a dental emergency, some people may find them a nuisance and would like to fix them, and the best way is using dental bonding.

What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a minimally invasive restorative treatment that helps to restore the shape and functionality of your teeth. A composite resin is used as a bonding material.

It is cost-effective and considerably less expensive than dental veneers and crowns.

When Is Tooth Bonding Considered?

Dental bonding is used to fix an array of imperfections such as;

  • Chipped teeth. A composite resin is applied to smoothen the teeth and conceal the crack
  • Small teeth. If you have too-small teeth, the dentist can apply bonding material to make them appear larger
  • Discolored teeth. A composite material can be used to hide stains that cannot be corrected with teeth whitening
  • Dental bonding for teeth can also be done to close the spaces and create a better appearance

What’s The Dental Bonding Procedure?

1. Preparation

A little preparation may be done before the bonding material is applied. You may not necessarily need anesthesia as the procedure is not invasive. However, local anesthesia may be used if you have a decayed tooth, drilling is required, or the crack is near the nerve.

A color guide is used to choose a composite resin that matches your natural tooth color.

2. Bonding

The affected teeth will be roughened and conditioned to help the bonding material stick to the teeth. The tooth-colored resin is then applied and molded to the desired shape. The tooth will be polished to match the surface of your other teeth.

The bonding material will take 30 to 60 minutes to harden, but the dentist can use a laser to hasten the process.

How Long Does the Tooth Bonding Last?

The lifespan of the bonding material will depend on your oral habits and how much dental bonding was done. On average, dental bonding can last from three to 10 years before they need to be replaced.

Any Special Care to Consider?

Unlike other dental treatments, dental bonding doesn’t require any special care apart from your normal dental care. Brush and floss as you normally do, and use an antiseptic mouthwash at least once daily. Also, avoid tea, coffee, wine, and cola in the first 48 hours after your bonding is done to prevent discoloration.

Advantages and Risks of Tooth Bonding

Advantages

Tooth bonding is the least expensive cosmetic dental treatment and the easiest to perform. The bonding is done in one dental visit unless you have multiple teeth to be fixed, and the procedure takes about an hour. Additionally, it is minimally invasive and does not need your enamel to be ground down. Plus, anesthesia is not used unless you need a cavity filling.

Risks

The dental bonding material is not as strong as your other regular teeth and they can crack, fracture or chip. Therefore, avoid habits like biting and chewing hard objects. Furthermore, the resin material is also prone to stains and could discolor with time.

Due to its limitations, dental bonding is best suited for small dental procedures that require temporary correction. For more serious dental conditions, the dentist will recommend other orthodontic dental treatments.

When to Call a Dentist?

You may experience mild tooth sensitivity for a few days and it will subside. However, if you have severe tooth sensitivity lasting for more than a week, call our dentist.

Additionally, if you notice any sharp edges or your teeth feel loose or strange when you bite down, come to our dental clinic for an assessment.
